Take Special Care of Your Holiday Guests
The holiday season is almost here and as sure as Winter follows Autumn you will have a few overnight guests before the New Year’s dawn breaks over the horizon. With far-flung families more the norm than the exception today you may even expect stay over guests who will be with you for a week or even longer.
If you are part of the Boomer generation you likely have a spare guest room or two that you can use to accomodate your vistors. You can make this holiday season a more memorable and happy experience for everybody if you take a few simple steps now, while there’s still plenty of time, to get those spare bedrooms and the rest of your house prepared for your visitors. Set the bar even higher. With a little planning you can make your guests feel like they are staying in a 5 star resort.
If that spare bedroom still looks the same way it did before your youngest headed off for that first job in the big city, then it’s definitely the right time for a makeover. Interior designers suggest that it’s a lot easier emotionally for a homeowner to makeover a room, like a child’s bedroom, that has deeply rooted sentimentality if they first clear out the entire room. That includes every stick of furniture, every item hanging in a closet, every stuffed animal, and every knick knack. Take the rugs out too if it’s time.
Repaint the room with pastel, adult colors. Experts recommend hues that tend to relax and soothe such as neutrals, pale blues, light greens, or even creamy off-whites and yellows. Add a luxurious splash of deep blue, forest green or royal marooon for coordinating accents.
Put the dressers and other storage pieces back in the room empty, or as empty as you can make them. Nothing speaks ‘welcome to our house’ to a guest as much as empty and freshly lined dresser drawers that they can empty their suitcase into.
If your budget is too tight for a luxury coil mattress replacement consider a kids air mattress.
If you are expecting a really big crowd you may have to expand into normally unused areas of your house. If evening chill is a problem you can solve it quickly with a portable propane heater.
Extra side dishes and additional food preparation can be taken care of with a Cuisinart toaster over.
