I booked through AAA and for 3 of us and 2 islands for 7 nights (Oahu 3 nights & Maui 4 nights), flight from NC, and rental car in Maui with a couple upgrades was just under $5000. But it doesn’t include our meals cause I want to explore the island and not be stuck in the area to get my food. I checked several companies and sites and found this to be the cheapest way to go for what I wanted to do. It is cheaper to do just one island. Plus it saves money if you do not get ocean view or partial ocean view rooms. From what I have heard and read Maui is very romantic, safer and has awesome nightlife (I’ve not been yet so I don’t know but that is what I have heard). Also check into the Go Oahu card or Go Maui card I have heard good and bad about these. Also if you get the Hawaii for dummies book it has a lot of ideas on saving money and getting the best deals on everything for hotels & condos to activities & combo deals.

I am going to Maui in May for my honeymoon, I have heard it is one of the most romantic places in Hawaii, and still has the nightlife scene. I went through Expedia and got a 6 night hotel stay, round trip plane tickets and a rental car all for $2,800. Not bad.

The best place for night life in Hawaii is Lahaina on Maui. There’s good snorkeling around there, too. And, you can take non-certified scuba trips out to a place called Molokini, which is a partially submerged vocano cone that serves as a protected reef. I don’t recommend that anyone try to learn surfing or windsurfing in Hawaii. It’s definitely no place for beginners.
The flight and rental car alone is going to cost you nearly $2000 (round trip from San Diego to Maui is currently around $600 - $800 per person, plus $250 or so for a rental car). Just a resort condo where you still have to buy your food and stuff is going to run you about $1500 for a week. And, the all-inclusive places down by Wailea or in Kaanapali are probably like $250 to $300 per person per day. Not to mention the cost of your activities (snorkeling is cheap, if you just go off the shore at a beach).
Hawaii’s not cheap, to get there or while you’re there. If you have that limited a budget, I would suggest Cabo San Lucas in Baja California. It’s so Americanized that you don’t have to worry about all the drug cartel violence in Mexico. Flights are pretty cheap (about $350 per person from San Diego). And, you can find all-inclusive resorts from about $150 a day per person. Plus, there’s some great snorkeling around there. It’s not Hawaii. But, it’s pretty much the same climate (just drier) and it’s certainly more affordable.

You didn’t mention where you are flying from, when you are going, how long you plan on staying, and whether you want to visit more than one island. I have not been yet but will tell you one thing for sure: Hawaii does NOT have all-inclusives. If all inclusives are very important to you, look into the Dominican Republic or Jamaica (Mexico too, but there are problems going on there right now).
My fiance and I will be getting married in 3.5 weeks and leaving for our honeymoon right after. We have booked a 2 week trip in Hawaii, 5 days in Maui, 5 days on the Big Island, and 4 in Oahu (Honolulu). We are flying out of NYC round trip (and direct, 11 hours! Whew!) on April 19th and coming back on May 4th. I had to book a few separate packages to move around between the islands but so far we have spent $5,000 on: flights (round trip from NY and also between the islands), hotels (4 stars everywhere, it is our honeymoon after all!) and a convertible mustang in Maui and on the Big Island. We are planning on spending another $5-$7,000 once we are actually there, Hawaii is very expensive and we want to do lots of activities, nice dinners out, golf, spa, etc.
You sound young, and probably wouldn’t want to spend that much money on your trip. Why not go to the Caribbean? Seriously, the Dominican Republic is extremely cheap and you can get an amazing 4.5-5 star hotel with flight for 5 nights for less than $2K from NY.
Have a wonderful time and bon voyage! =)

Hi Rae Rae,
Good luck, and if you make it out here to our islands, ENJOY!
As a Maui resident in her twenties, if you are looking for nightlife and excitement, I have to recommend the island of Oahu (Waikiki/Honolulu) especially for a 21st birthday. They have lots of clubs and nightlife and its like a big city atmosphere but right on the beach. As far as city life goes, its a pretty nice place to visit. If, on the other hand, you are looking for something more laid back, then I’d recommend Maui, which does have *some* night life, though not compared to Waikiki. I’m not an expert on Oahu, but I’m quite certain Oahu does have snorkeling and scuba, definitely surfing, though not sure about windsurfing. I hear Hanauma Bay on Oahu has awesome snorkeling at the preserve. Plus, Oahu has many other touristy attractions. If you do go to Oahu, check out the North Shore of the island. What a difference! Its so beautiful up there and so much quieter!
As for price, Oahu may be your best bet. Unfortunately we in Hawaii do not have any all inclusives like they have in the Caribbean, but since the economy is tight, you might find some great deals at hotels. I’m not familiar with any budget hotels on Oahu, but on Maui, if you found yourself on the Lahaina side of the island, there may be some options in the $100-200 range. For instance, check out Makai Inn, Pioneer Inn, Lahaina Inn and maybe some of the condos up in Honokowai/Napili/Kahana. Worth checking out. The Lahaina side is probably your best bet for night life that is geared towards tourists - Front Street has the most night life on the island (but don’t get too excited, it pales by comparison to any major city). Still, the Lahaina side (or West Side) of Maui will give you plenty of romantic moments.
As for food, well, there are some budget options on Maui, for instance in Lahaina there’s Kahuna Kabob’s, Aloha Mixed Plate, the food at the Cannery Mall, but Lahaina also has some amazing restaurants that are worth splurging on (Lahaina Grill, for instance). Again, wish I could be more helpful about Oahu, but alas…
Aloha!
