Instead of staying at a resort, check into a cruise. This would enable you to see more since Hawaii is composed of several islands. I went with my mom a couple summers ago and we stayed on The Pride of Aloha (Norwegian Cruiselines). It was very nice. There was a pool, workout room, all you can eat buffet and many other things available right on the ship. The rooms were somewhat small, but we had just the standard room, so i'm sure you could pay more and get an upgrade to something more spacious. The ship travels during the night, usually, and you can get off during the day and go do things. The cruiseline has different excursions you can sign up for and they will transport you to and from them. The whole experience was wonderful and i would highly reccomend it. You get to see soo much! However if you are set on getting a resort, you should see if you can get one on Kuai'i. That was my absolute favorite island. It's the one with the Fern Grotto and the rainforest-like scenery. The Big Island was my second favorite simply because there is so much to do. I would recommend going to Volcano National Park if you're into that kind of thing. You get the opportunity to walk through a dried lava tube and walk on the dried lava of old eruptions. In some cases (if you're lucky) you will get the opportunity to also see hot, flowing lava. This is one of the excursions i went on, and it was fantastic; however, you can do this by yourselves, too.
Hope this was helpful for you! Check out the norwegian cruise line website for pricing and details:
Have a great time! (:
